Our Finances and What They Mean to You

by - Monday, March 05, 2018

We now find ourselves with seven issues under our belt and are really proud of all we've accomplished in quite a short period of time. Of course, none of this could happen without the support and contribution of so many great Canadians who have caught our vision and supported us by sending great work to fill our pages. Thank you for believing in us!

Money is something we don't like to talk about because it immediately becomes about business and we don't like to think about Blank Spaces as a business. It is a heart project.

But a starving heart eventually stops beating.

In an effort to keep Blank Spaces up and running, we need to find ways to lessen the financial burden. We are a self-supported venture and, with the high price of quality printing (not to mention the robbery of shipping costs) our expenses increase with every issue. To carry on in this manner would not be prudent. We believe we are contributing something of value to the literary world and it would break our hearts to have to stop because of something as silly as money.

That being said, we are changing the way we pay our contributors. In the past, every contributor has received a complimentary print copy. By eliminating this expense, we save ourselves nearly $1100 annually. Piddly? Maybe. But that's money out of our own pockets, and as much as we'd love to thank our contributors in this manner, we believe that money is better spent on marketing and networking.

We adore our contributors, and certainly don't want them to think we aren't thankful for the hard work they've done. We are amending our practice so that each contributor is given a complimentary one year digital subscription - with the option to purchase print copies of the issue their work appears in at a discounted rate.

Any submission that has already been accepted and slotted for a future issue will be grandfathered in - meaning the contributor will still receive one print copy as payment for their work. All new submissions accepted from this point on will fall beneath our new practice.

Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this change, please feel free to reach out through the comment form or via email.
